Upon the limitations from testing other keel guard products it was time to search for a better solution to protect my kayak.  A keel guard is to protect the bow and stern of your kayak from damage due to landing, dragging, or loading and unloading. It can also protect against submerged objects such as rocks and oyster bars. Gator Patch Kayak Keel Protection and Repair seemed like a great solution!

Searching for products commonly used on boats I ran across Gator Guards. This company offers a product Gator Patch Kayak Keel Protection. As we all know plastic is a tough material attempting get things to stick permanently. Especially in the case of protection materials that are constantly being scraped across surfaces with the entire weight of the boat on. Gator Patch seems to be a unique material that may hold up to the daily abuse us kayak angler have to throw at it.

Gator Patch:

Gator Patch Kayak Keel Protection material is comprised of a UV core fiberglass reinforced polyester. One side has adhesive to apply to the area you would like to protect or repair. The patch will protect flat, curved, dented, angled and, joint areas. It is able to repair damage such as scuffs gouges cracks and also holes. It can be sanded and painted if desired.

Gator patch is available in three different sizes.

• 3 x 4″
• 3″ x 6″
• 9″ x 12″

Gator Patch can be cut to any desired size. Cutting should be done indoors out of UV light. UV light cured the product quickly in sunlight.

Application:

Gator patch is easy to apply.

With a coarse grit sand paper scuff up the area with a crosshatch or X pattern. This will create a better surface for Gator Guard to adhere to. Wipe down with a clean rag and 70% isopropyl rubbing alcohol. Let the area dry.

The 9″ x 12″ size is the best product for a keel guard. You can cut it 3 strips 3″ x 12″.

Cut the Gator Guard to the desired shape and size indoors. To apply the patch simply peel off the white backing to expose the adhesive. Place the Gator Guard on the area of repair or protection. Mold it to the shape by pressing down to remove bumps and air bubbles. You can use a roller tool or a simple 3/4″ socket wrench. Remove the clear film and let stand outdoors exposed to the sunlight or sky on a cloudy day.

Cure times will vary due to geographical locations and weather conditions. The curing process should take a maximum time of up to an hour. If preferred you can then sand and paint the patch or keel guard to match the hull of your kayak!

Review:

I installed a small patch on the keel of my kayak a few weeks ago. The curing process didn’t complete due to my application as the sun was setting. However I went fishing the next morning and the patch was hardened but not completely. The water did not effect the patch at all. It fully cured in the sun on the drive home and is now very rigid. Since then I have dropped and loaded the kayak from my truck 3 times and the guard is a little scuffed but is doing exactly what it was intended to do protecting my kayaks keel!

Hanging out at Delaware Paddlesports a few weeks back a friend of mine was on the phone purchasing the new Hobie Compass. She has been kayak fishing for years and went from Paddling to Pedaling due to health issues and then from pedaling to using the Torqeedo Ultralight 403 as assistance. Now she was looking to get on a Compass due to it being less weight than her current kayak. Speaking with her she wanted to install the Torqeedo on the Hobie Compass and use the compasses rudder to steer. This article runs through a Hobie Compass Torqeedo Ultralight Install!

Installing a fixed steering Torqeedo Ultralight on a Hobie Compass is fairly simple. A few aftermarket accessories and hardware are essential to a clean install. This is a no drill install with the motor mount but does require minimal deck hardware for guiding the Trim and Lock lines for the motor.

Hobie Compass Torqeedo Install

The no drill motor install utilizes the Hobie Power Pole Adapter Plate for the Hobie Compass. The plate adapts to 4 molded in brass inserts The hardware included with this kit is not needed. You will need to acquire 1″ #10-32 screws and also 1/2″ nylon spacers to raise the plate up to allow the ball mounting hardware clearance.

The Ball placement is on the forward right corner of the flattest portion of the plate. Once the ball is mounted attach the motor and align it to the center. Mark the area to be drilled for the rubber brace. Install and tighten everything. Tighten the clamp with holes on the pylon and place pin to fix the motor position. The prop will face away from the stern and be centered properly.

Running the trim and lock lines will require 2 Sealect Designs track mounted clam cleats. Attach the Suncore carabiners to the end of the 2 lines. Attach to the Trim Fin on the motor. Run the lines to the desired location at the seat. Now place the Sealect Designs Kayak Deck Line Guides to guide the lines. Drill and rivet. Mark and drill for the pad eye location in line with the trim fin of the Torqeedo. Cut the length of desired line at the clam cleat and finish off with a knob.

Installation complete!

Features

The base connection

Currently the flush mount is only available. Alternatively a track mount kit is sold separately. It works fine and is plenty strong. The track mount base is expected to ship in the fall of 2018.

The base connection is a spline type which enables the rod holder to pivot 360 degrees and to be detached. The Triple Threat is easily lifted from the base. Once lifted can be rotated to the desired position, Simply press back down to lock in place.

Pivot knob

The adjustments of this rod holder are very one hand operation friendly. To pivot the rod holder twist the adjustment knob a quarter. You may now pivot rod holder to your desired angle. To set the adjustment you simply twist quarter in the opposite direction. The pivot point allows 6 points of adjustment with 45 degrees of oscillation.

Retention Collar

The retention collars function is exactly the name. Twist to open and twist to lock the rod in place. The collar functions like most rod holders on the market except has an added lever for one handed operation.

Rear Gimbal

The rear gimbal is unique as it pivots to a 90 degree position to stop the butt of the rod from sliding through. With the retention collar closed simply place the fishing rod through the collar and rest the butt on the gimbal and the rod holder is now converted to a fast action tube style.

Leash Points

The rod holder features three total leash points in the flush mount and recessed mount setup. Leashing to the base is best in case the rod holder is not secured properly as has happened in the past with track ball mounted rod holders loosening and becoming lost.

My observations of the Triple Threat Rod Holder

The Sea-lect Designs Triple Threat Rod Holder is best used as a front rod holder until an extension is available. This rod holder appears to be a great setup for trolling and dead sticking. The unique Gimbal Transforms the rod holder into a tube style with the collar locked. This rod holder has one handed operation in mind. Everything on the rod holder can be adjusted with one hand.
